Description
- The Little Black Box You Can’t Do Without
Though it may seem small, a relay is an important part of your car’s electrical system. It allows power to be transferred from an energy source (e.g. battery) in the vehicle to high current components such as headlamps, horns and amplifiers by ‘making’ a high current circuit. A basic relay consists of a wire coil which creates a magnetic field when a current is passed through it, attracting the adjacent metal contact and hence closing the circuit and allowing power to reach the connected component. When there is no longer any current passing through the circuit, e.g. when the headlight switch is turned off, then the magnetic field no longer exists and the metal contact springs back into its original position and breaks the circuit, in this case turning the headlights off.
